Charm for a Sleigh

by Geordie Ingerson

Snow Queen 1

When the snow comes down and wheels will bog and founder, it is time for the sled (for chores) or the sleigh (for travel). Here we ask the blessing of Skadi, the former wife of Njord, and goddess of winter. Wave a branch of spruce over the sled or sleigh, and say the rhym below. Pour out a little clear liquor for her, making sure to pour some over the branch. Sprinkle the sled or sleigh well, tuck the spruce branch into it, and be off!(It is all right if the branch goes flying.)

Ship that sails over seas of snow,

Frost-born Skadi who once sailed

On the rolling boat of Njord,

Bless thee now, thy sides and runners,

That they might never toss and turn

Into her frozen banks and mounds.
