Modgud

by Michaela Macha

winterforestOne foot in the land of the living
In the golden haze far ahead,
And, fading to fog behind me,
One foot in the realm of the dead.

Under the bridge of my vigil
The river of time flows fast;
I watch drifting by below me
All things that were, and are past.

Dark water that holds no reflection,
A touch of ice to the bone;
It carries all memories with it,
None can drink it but Hela alone.

The dead walk to me and through me
On their way to her shadowy throne;
The souls of centuries passing
Left never a trace on the stone.

Barred is the bridge for the breathing,
And none that enter, return;
Stream swelling with nine worlds' weeping,
For Balder in vain they did yearn.

My post is the place between places,
And grey is the rainbow I guard;
One day you will walk in these spaces
To find your passage unbarred.
