Head or Tail

by Michaela Macha

snakewave4I am the ultimate border,
The uttermost ending of all.
I separate chaos from order,
My body an animate wall.

My circle is endless, unbroken,
My beginning also my end;
If ever I should be awoken,
The sea and the sky will be rent.

Exiled under the ocean,
The edge of all that exists,
I sleep without breath or motion,
The world-egg fast in my twists.

My living line is the limit;
Do not cross it, when deeper you dive.
All that can be, is within it.
Beyond me, nothing survives.

Few sailors ever have seen me,
Though all can feel I am there.
Midgard's maps have the margin:
“Here be the Serpent. Beware.”
